Περιγραφή Προγράμματος: | The Aegean Maritime Archaeology Summer School of the University of the Aegean plans to run for a 2nd year after successful start current year, in Andros Island (see https://aegeanarch2013.pns.aegean.gr/)
It will be made in collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Dept of Maritime Archaeology, and the Hellenic Center for marine Research and scheduled for 1-15 July 2014.
It aims at providing students with experiences on the archaeology of the Aegean Sea (insular and underwater), including contemporary finds that have reshaped current thought on issues concerning:
- permanent settlements instead of temporary (seasonal) habitation,
- early navigation,
- intercommunication, and cultural interactions, since the Holocene (~10,000 years BC).
- modern interdisciplinary techniques applied to geomarine & human/ material culture environment
Students will be getting practical skills on methods of marine research. In particular, they will gain experience in:
•tunderwater prospection (sonars, magnetometry etc) for the location of shipwrecks and ancient settlements. The research vessel ALKYON will be employed for this reason with state-of-the-art equipment on bottom reconnaissance.
•tunderwater photography and photomosaics
•tsnorkeling in location with ancient relics (for shallow ecosystems and for submerged antiquities).
The invited tutors are either scholars at the University of the Aegean or other Universities, Research establishments and the Public Sector from Greece and abroad.
It is an accredited Course of 7 ECTS Credit Units (lectures, snorkeling, coastal fieldwork, onboard practice, exams) (1 ECTS - European Credit Transfer System =~ 23 hrs workload and includes lectures, preparation/reading, onboard practicing, snorkelling, fieldwork).
Graduate students are subjected to an exam test by the end on the course lectures.
The instructors will evaluate the exams and will take into account a) the preparatory Reports prior to this Course, as well as, b) the participation in discussions and lectures, as the basis for the final grade. This will be a dual programme with University of Haifa (learning activities in Aegean and Haifa).
