| Περιγραφή Προγράμματος: | Mapping of the spatial distribution of the Persian (or Caucasian) Squirrel (Sciurus anomalus) on the island of Lesvos, which hosts the only population of this species in Greece and in the european region. Presence/absence of the species is recorded on a 5x5 km grid. Data are collected by exploration of each grid square and by collection of information from the locals, followed by visits to all sites for which there is reliable information to check and confirm the presence of the species. Estimation of the total population of the species on Lesvos by sampling, based on population density measurements at selected representative sites. Evaluation of the conservation status of the Lesvos population of the Persian Squirrel and design of measures that may need to be taken for the effective conservation of this population. |
