Τίτλος Προγράμματος: UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY IN RHODES: TRADITIONAL AND NEW OTHERS
Περιγραφή Προγράμματος: The research aims at capturing the qualitative dimensions of social diversity in Rhodes. Its ultimate goal is to reach generalizable conclusions on the management of migration in places where different cultures traditionally come together. Rhodes is for centuries a contact point of civilizations and particularly of Greek Orthodox, Jews and Muslims. These social identities were officially recognized as autonomous communities, at least until 1922. In contrast with Thrace, in Rhodes the particular tourism economy imposed a smoother coexistence between Christians and Muslims. The education in the same schools, the dispersion of families across Rhodes and their employment in every sector of the economy indicate that despite their diversity, Rhodians Muslims are integrated but not absorbed. Consequently they constitute traditional others. On the other hand, the waves of Muslim immigrants and refugees (mixed migration flows) heading to Europe make their first stop on Rhodes. Differences in culture and their vulnerable legal position hinder the social inclusion even of those who acquire a temporary residence permit. The central research question is whether it would be possible the diversity of the traditional others to become the vehicle of approaching the new others. More specifically, if it would be possible existing or new institutions of Rhodian Muslims, under the supervision of the competent migration authorities, to contribute to the integration of immigrants. The progressive integration of the younger generations of Muslims in the Rhodian society highlights the elderly ones as bearers of the so-called historical trauma of diversity. At the same time, their spatial coincidence with Muslim immigrants at the operating mosque of Rhodes, makes the former the population under research. A stratified representative sample of the abovementioned population will be approached via semi-structured interviews concerning the conceptualisation of the historical trauma. Those interviews will be approached through content analysis. Interviews with younger Muslims, Christians and immigrant groups will be the control groups and will contribute at the second hypothesis of the research, namely the attitude of Rhodian Muslims towards the mixed migration flows. Deliverables of the research: production of 4 studies / reports, 3 scientific publications and 7 outreach activities (including the production of a documentary film).
