Περιγραφή Προγράμματος: | In the proposed project, mapping of existing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and planning of proposed MPA networks will be performed in two areas of the Eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean Sea and Cyprus. Additionally, mapping of essential fish habitats will be done, and the effect of MPA in achieving the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and the development of ECOPATH models in selected MPAs, will be examined using previous and new data in order to evaluate the current overall contribution of MPAs in fisheries sustainability. Finally, what if scenaria of MPA impacts on MSY and Ecopath/Ecospace models will be evaluated. These scenaria will be discussed with a wide range of stakeholders in order to propose commonly agreed and more effective MPAs in the study areas.
Towards that direction previously acquired data and new data will be combined in order to: (a) establish appropriate indicators and criteria for the evaluation of the conditions that will ensure the establishment of a coherent network of MPAs (b) evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the establishment of no-take zones in area-based management towards achieving MSY objectives (c) understand possible ways of MPA networks’ contribution in limiting the fishing pressure (d) compare, with respect to the overall MSYs objective, the bio-economic effects of establishing an adequate network of MPAs and (e) evaluate the impact of human activities on the effects of MPAs on exploited biological resources and fishing yields with respect to the MSY objectives. Finally, different management schemes will be developed and examined in order to support the optimization of fishery management.
