Abstract: | This paper discusses the low adoption of PETs among SNS users, based on the results of an empirical investigation among users of social networking services. 170 members of 5 popular social networks provided information on how they protect their privacy, as well as on the most important factors guiding their decision to use privacy preserving tools or not. Research findings suggest that awareness of PETs is still low among social network users and that quality, effectiveness, cost and ease of use are critical factors influencing PETs adoption. A small number of users was also found not to employ any PETs, despite the fact that they reported being familiar with some of them. This paper enhances our understanding of PETs diffusion from the perspective of users and argues that usability aspects need to guide their design and implementation. |
